When shopping for a set of pod lights for your truck, jeep, or SUV, there’s no short supply of options.
But with so many available, how do you know which lights are good, and which you should avoid?
Here,
we’ll take a look at the all-new Tiny Monster Concept Pod lights from ARC Lighting and see how they stack up
against some of the other pod lights on the market for your 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, or 2020 Chevrolet Suburban.
We’ll go
over the specs, build quality, and price so we can decide: Who are these lights for, and who aren't
they for?
These LED pods are a street-legal lighting solution that provide additional lighting in
town, on the highway, or off-road. Upfitted with automotive-grade Osram OSLON LEDs and TIR projector
lenses, these LED pods are designed to be small enough to work with a wide range of mounting
options.
If you’re wondering what Osram is, you may be more familiar with another name that it’s
known by: Sylvania.
These LED pods are made with some of the world's most reliable automotive
grade LEDs, produced by Sylvania.
TIR stands for Total Internal Reflection. TIR projector lenses use internal reflection to
control the spread of the light, resulting in a focused beam with a clean cut-off. You’re probably already
familiar with these types of housings, as most US vehicles switched from refractor housings to TIR
projectors in the mid-to-late 2000’s.
These high-quality LED’s combined with TIR projectors result in
a focused, controlled beam that can be easily patterned, earning them SAE certification and DOT approval.
ARC Lighting went to the effort to submit for and obtain DOT approval nation-wide in the US. It’s not the
lack of brightness that makes them SAE approved, it’s the focused pattern that keeps the line of light cut
so it doesn’t blind on-coming drivers.
The Concept Series pods are available in a variety of beam patterns including fog, flood,
driving, and spot lights. Need a different beam pattern than what you originally
got with your pods? ARC Lighting has what they call “SafeSwap”, and allows you to change the lens on the pod
lights without compromising the build or water seal. Very few lights on the market have this
feature.
When compared to cheap online alternatives, the Concept Series pods may seem fairly similar
at first glance, but specifications only tell part of the story. Let’s use lumens as an
example.
Since lumens are typically measured at start up, a pod light might measure 3,000lm when
first turned on, but after a half hour of use may only output a fraction of that.
Why is that? LED
pods made with cheap components and poor cooling will start to lose brightness to prevent the components
from overheating and failing. Despite the small size of the Tiny Monster Concept Pods, the higher quality
components and housing design allow this light to stay cool and consistent while in use.
The Tiny Monster Concept Series LED Pods are a great option for anyone looking for an LED lighting solution that is compact and versatile enough to be mounted anywhere on a vehicle.
We wouldn’t recommend these for heavy off-roaders who require their lights to be completely submersible or
stand up to extreme impact. While they are IP67 rated, that won’t protect against submersion, and these
lights also lack an impact rating.
Overall, we think these pod lights are a great choice for
reliable, compact lighting that won’t break the bank.
