Cadillac Escalade ESV 2020

Whether you’re the type of person who wants to turn your 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, or 2020 Cadillac Escalade ESV into a “true adventure rig”, or just looking for some additional carrying capacity for your vehicle, adding a roof rack to your vehicle is a great way to increase the amount of gear you can carry. But, with so many different types of roof racks available, it can feel a little overwhelming to try to figure out which one is best suited for your needs.

Here, we’ll take a look at the Yakima LockNLoad roof rack platform. We’ll give you an overview of the LockNLoad, go over some of the options and use cases, and answer who the LockNLoad is and isn’t for.

The Yakima LockNLoad has a black powder coated finish that is resistant to corrosion.

What is the Yakima LockNLoad?

The Yakima LockNLoad platform is made of aluminum, giving it strength while keeping the overall weight down, and has a black powder coated finish that is resistant to corrosion. With 6 different platform sizes available, there’s a platform size for almost any use case, from compact cars all the way up to full-size trucks.

The smallest size platform will work for a lot of smaller vehicles, coming in at 55” x 49” and weighing around 43.5 lbs. This ranges to the largest platform, measuring 84” x 62” and weighing just under 85 lbs.

Perimeter rail kits are available for all LockNLoad platforms, making it easy to convert your traditional platform rack into a basket style rack and back again at your discretion.

Integrated T-slot rails allow for easy attachment of a wide variety of accessories, such as: bike racks, ,kayak racks, surfboard racks, ski racks, cargo boxes, spare tire carriers, lighting mounts, jack mounts, Yakima’s RoadShower, awnings, and even rooftop tents. The LockNLoad easily attaches to nearly any roof rack with Yakima’s optional LockNLoad cross bar clamps, or directly to Yakima SkyLine and TimerLine towers with the optional LockNLoad SL Adapter.

Be sure to check your vehicle’s roof and weight capacity so you don’t overload it. The rack load capacity is limited by the towers or surface it’s being mounted to, not the rack itself, with an evenly distributed weight capacity starting at 165 lbs. all the way up to 330 lbs.

The rack load capacity of the Yakima LockNLoad is limited by the towers or surface it’s being mounted to, not the rack itself.

Who is and isn't the Yakima LockNLoad for?

The LockNLoad from Yakima is a high-quality, aluminum roof rack designed for a wide range of applications, backed by Yakima's reputation and a limited lifetime warranty.

At a retail starting price of around $830 and ranging all the way up to just over $1,000, this definitely isn’t a cheap, off-brand roof rack. The Yakima LockNLoad is a high-quality, aluminum roof rack designed for a wide range of applications, backed by Yakima’s reputation and a limited lifetime warranty.

If you’re someone looking for a roof rack that’s designed specifically for your vehicle, the LockNLoad may not be the best option. While there are many different sized platforms available, and it is a good looking rack, it’s not going to win any awards for having the lowest profile or following the body lines of your vehicle.

If you’re someone who’s just looking for a budget roof rack option, and you aren’t concerned with appearances or long term durability, the LockNLoad probably isn't your best option either. If you think a full platform is too much for your needs, Yakima also has a full line offering of basket style carriers including the Off-Grid in 2 sizes and their Warrior series in 3 sizes.

However, if you’re someone looking for a high quality aluminum roof rack platform that can be customized to fit your exact needs, fits most vehicles, and is backed by Yakima’s great reputation, we at Titan Truck think the LockNLoad platform is a great option.
