What is Yakima’s Tonneau Kit 1?

Yakima’s Tonneau Kit 1 is their solution for anyone who wants the best of both worlds: a tonneau cover and an overbed truck rack. This kit will allow you to utilize the T-slot rails of many retractable and roll-up covers as mounting points for Yakima’s OutPost and OverHaul HD bed racks, allowing you to securely carry up to 300 lbs. of gear on-road and 180 lbs. off-road.

How to Install the Yakima Tonneau Kit 1

Installing the Yakima Tonneau Kit 1 is simple, and everything you need is right in the box. First, clean your tonneau rail’s T-slots and insert the T-bolts. Install the base pads over the T-bolts, and then install your OutPost or OverHaul HD towers over both the base pads and T-bolts. Next, loosely install the acorn nuts and locking pin over the T-bolts. You want them to be tight enough to hold everything in place, but loose enough for you to make adjustments in the next step.

Grab a tape measure and make sure the towers are lined up equally, measuring from the cab to the front tower, and then the front tower to the rear tower. Tighten the acorn nuts using the included wrench, then use the wrench included with your OutPost or OverHaul HD towers to tighten the locking pin. Now, you can take your SKS lock assembly and secure it to the locking pin, ensuring that none of your hard work can just walk off.

Who is and isn’t the Yakima Tonneau Kit 1 for?

Only a few retractable covers are officially compatible with the Yakima Tonneau Kit 1.

According to Yakima, there are only a few retractable covers that are officially compatible with this kit, such as the Retrax XR. However, in our experience this kit works with other retractable or roll-up bed covers that utilize T-slot rails, such as Roll-N-Lock’s M-Series XT retractable cover.

However, if you’re someone with a folding cover or one-piece bed cap, the design of the OutPost and OverHaul HD towers prevent these covers from being able to fully open. You may want to look into a different bed rack system such as Truck Hero’s Elevate Rack.

If you have a retractable or roll-up cover that doesn’t have T-slot rails, this tonneau kit isn’t going to be the solution you need. Even though we are starting to see more options when it comes to bed cover-compatible rack systems, there still aren’t very many options.
